On 30 July 2011, Wayne Parnell made it public that he had converted to Islam back in January 2011 when he was just 22-years-old, since then he has been an inspiration for South African Muslims and reverts alike. During his reversion, he changed his name and adopted a new Muslim name Waleed, but many still refer to him as Wayne.
