
On Sunday, June 18th, the body of 17-year-old who was identified by friends as Nabra Hussein, was discovered by the police after she was reported missing after an alleged attack by suspect 22-year-old Darwin Martinez Torres.
The Nubian Egyptian girl, Nabra, was attending late night prayers at All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS) Center in Sterling, Virginia. Nabra and a group of her friends took a break from their prayers and headed to IHOP to eat a meal for Suhur.
At around 3:30 am, after their meal they made their way back to the mosque on foot, they were walking along Dranesville Road, when a car pulled up and a man got out and started swinging a baseball bat at the group of girls, they all scattered apart for one.
After regrouping they discovered Nabra was missing, the police were called about 4 am when the girls couldn’t find their friend.
After extensive searching, the police discovered Nabra's body in a pond, a baseball bat too recovered from the area.
The police managed to trace down the attacker to be Darwin Martinez Torres, he has been charged with murder.
A spokesperson for the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, has stated that detectives have "not gotten any indication that this was motivated by hate or bias." The girls were all wearing traditional clothing and were noticeably Muslim.
In a news release, Rizwan Jaka, a board member at ADAMS, said, "We are devastated and heartbroken as our community undergoes and processes this traumatic event. It is a time for us to come together to pray and care for our youth"
Khadijah Abdullah-Lardas has started a LaunchGood campaign for Nabra's family to aid them in this troubling time, the campaign has managed to raise around $118,000 from over 5000 supporters, in the short time it has begun.
